The 90-10 Rule of Dieting Developing lifestyle habits now that will help save your time, money, health, and sanity, later. Bent On Better - Matt April - Podcast

I think it’s important to start this entire post off by clarifying one MAJOR thing; I am not a fan of, nor do I believe in doing diets or dieting just for life.  (If you are someone who does physique competitions and what-not, dieting is part of the choice you’ve made.  Power to you!  But you and I both know those last few weeks and days are no fun, and it’s not something that you follow 24/7, 365.)  Diets are boring, blah, unhealthy, and unappealing to many of us.

So what is this whole 90-10 Rule?

It is rather simple, and I’m so glad you asked! 😉

The 90-10 Rule of dieting goes like this:

For 90% of the time, your diet is dialed in and on lockdown.  Make sure the foods you eat are healthy, wholesome, and as close to nature as possible.  This means LOTS of green vegetables (both fresh and frozen), meats & poultry (such as chicken, beef, turkey, and fish/shellfish), some fruits (mainly berries; raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries), starchy vegetables (like potatoes, yum!), and some whole grains (choose to go with naturally gluten-free grains, but it’s not required, just suggested) such as rice and oats.  My personal preference is to consume antibiotic free, cage-free, hormone free, organic, and non GMO, if possible.

For 10% of the time, your diet is whatever you want it to be because…well, you only have one life to enjoy, so there is no need to avoid indulging completely. Occasionally allow yourself enjoy some of your favorite not-so-good for you foods/beverages.

Besides, indulging is good for the mind, body, and soul.  And trust me, when I indulge, it’s a big ordeal.  I have the worst sweet tooth EVER.  So it doesn’t help that my wife is the queen of sweet treats and amazingly baked bites of delight.  She has quite the variety on her blog from cookies, to cakes, to pies, to some healthy options (thank goodness!). Have you seen her blog? Here is a little peek into the greatness that is the Fresh April Flours blog:

Look, if weight loss or fat loss is your your goal, a combination of a healthy diet (lifestyle habits) AND exercise will give you the best overall results, it’s not a matter of just one or the other.  The 90-10 Rule of Dieting is just a basic guideline for a way of life.

So to put it simply, The 90-10 Rule of Dieting basically means love your life, live in the moment, but keep everything in moderation.
